Fabric Yield Recommendations

The charts below provide a yield of fabric per size for the Bloom Shirt and Dress views with full length sleeves. These yields have been calculated for three fabric widths, with a variation for the Pointed and Half Penny Collars, as well as the Box Pleated Collar. Please note that these yields have been calculated for non-directional fabrics. If you choose a fabric with a directional print, twill or nap, you will require extra fabric.

In addition to the yields below, you will also need 50cm of interfacing for collar and cu pieces. You will also need 40cm of fabric for pocketing if you are sewing the Dress View and you do not wish to use your main fabric.

If you are making a Bloom Shirt or Dress with a Box Pleated Collar using 115cm wide fabric, the size you select will have a significant impact on the yield. We have a few tricks to help you with calculating the yield specific to your size - get in touch with us for help at patterns@thefabricstore.co.nz

*Please take care to pre-wash washable fabrics before you start sewing, to avoid shrinkage on your finished garment. Note that shrinkage can vary between fabrics and these yields do not take shrinkage into account.

Recommended Fabric + Supplies

Fabric
The Bloom Shirt + Dress is designed for light - medium weight woven fabrics such as linen, cotton and silk. We love how this pattern looks and feels in our Vintage Finish and Gingham Linens. For a pop of colour, you could also try a Liberty cotton print!

Interfacing
Interfacing is recommended for the top cuff and collar stand pieces and also for the top collar pieces, if sewing the pointed or half penny collar options. Select a woven interfacing in a weight appropriate for the fabric you are using.

Thread
You will need at least one spool of thread for straight stitching, and 4 additional threads if you choose to overlock or serge the exposed interior seams.

Buttons
If sewing the Shirt view, you will need x9 12mm buttons. If sewing the Dress view, you will need x 10 12mm buttons.

Tools
The Bloom Shirt + Dress can be completed with a regular domestic sewing machine, with zig zag stitch capability and buttonhole function. If desired, you can finish/neaten interior exposed seams with an overlocker/serger.

You will also require an iron, a point turner, a sharp pair of sewing scissors and pins.
