Fabric Yield Recommendations

Recommended Fabric + Supplies

Fabric
The May Jean is designed for medium to heavy weight woven fabric. We highly recommend using denim, and we love how May looks in our range of Upcycled Cotton Denim fabrics, available in a handful of tonal shades in stores and online. Alternatively, you could try a sturdy cotton drill or corduroy. You will also need a lightweight woven fabric, preferably non-stretch, to use for pocketing.

Buttons + Hardware
You will require 1 × 17mm jean button, or alternative button of your choice, and 8 jean rivets if you choose to use them. KATM Jeans Hardware Kits are available here.

Interfacing
Depending on the weight of your fabric you may choose to interface some of your pieces. We recommend a lightweight, woven fusible interfacing.

Thread
You will need at least one spool of thread for straight stitching, and 4 additional threads if you choose to overlock or serge the exposed interior seams. You will also a need at least one spool of top stitching thread in a contrasting or coordinating colour.

Zip
Your May Jean requires one 18cm jean zip.

Tools
The May Jean can be completed with a regular domestic sewing machine, with a buttonhole function and zig-zag stitch capability. If desired, you can finish/neaten interior exposed seams with an overlocker/serger. If your machine does not have a buttonhole or zig-zag capability, you can usually get buttonholes and bar tacks done at a garment alterations store. A hammer, awl and anvil/ hard metal surface for installing jeans buttons and rivets, if you are adding them.

You will also require an iron, tailor’s chalk, a point turner, a ruler, a sharp pair of sewing scissors and pins.
