Greige is a term used to describe fabrics that come directly from being woven or knitted in a raw state and have not yet undergone dye preparation processes. These fabrics are usually a pale grey or off white colour. The word ‘greige’ has origins in the Italian word greggio, meaning raw, unrefined, unbleached. Greige fabrics don’t tend to take dyes well, as they have not yet been stripped of natural waxes and oils present in the fabrics surface. For this reason, it’s recommended to make use of greige fabrics in their raw state. Greige fabrics are not guaranteed to take dyes well, as they have generally not yet been stripped of natural waxes and oils present in the fabrics surface. If you’d like to try at-home dyeing for greige fabrics, we’d suggest dyeing a few test pieces first to see what the colour absorption is like.
