Pattern Reviews — Atlas Dress

Aptly described by Vogue.com as the robes 'sophisticated sibling', wrap dresses are firmly on our sewing radar as we edge closer to the season of soirées and festival celebrations! Cue the Atlas Wrap Dress, a recent pattern release by Swiss-based patternmaker Masin, a refreshing take on the popular trans-seasonal shirtdress style. Read our review of this versatile pattern, kindly modelled by Annelise from our Online Store team.

Atlas Wrap Dress - Sewing Patterns by Masin

The Atlas Wrap Dress balances utilitarian classic shirting vibes with the cocooning charm of a wrap dress. This kind of style is ideal for the warmer weather we're heading towards here in the Southern Hemisphere! We couldn't find the difficulty level suggested, but we'd say it would suit an intermediate sewist. You'll need to sew gathers, cuffs and collar, as well as some complex intersecting pattern pieces. We chose size B for our model Annelise, and decided to mix and match two crisp new cotton ginghams that recently arrived in stores and online! The dress shown used 1.3m of the Med Check Crisp Cotton - Deep Blue and 1.6m of the Med Check Crisp Cotton - Mid Blue. We love how this turned out! The colours are fresh and playful, and the dress was a great fit for Annelise with the sleeves shortened by 2cm and the skirt shortend by 5cm. The instruction manual was clear and had well illustrated diagrams!

Candy Stripe Cotton / Rayon - Berry and Med Check Crisp Cotton - Mid Blue

Masin suggests that the Atlas Wrap Dress will suit a variety of light-midweight fabrics, such as viscose/rayon satin, cotton shirtings and lightweight linen. We love how these mismatched cotton ginghams turned out! If you'd like to try this look at home, we've got loads of checks, ginghams and stripes available online and in stores, including linens, cottons and blends. A few summery options are pictured below, from top to bottom is Small Stripe Cotton Shirting - Powder Pink, Lotus Bouquet Cotton - Pink / Orange, Candy Stripe Cotton / Rayon - Berry, Pencil Stripe Cotton / Rayon - Berry, Small Candy Stripe Cotton - Kelly and Little Gingham Cotton - Dartmouth Green

This was such a fun project! Choosing where to place the alternating colours is super satisfying and offers you the chance to make a garment that is truly unique. Share your projects with us using #TheFabricStore over on Instagram and TikTok, we can't wait to see what you're working on!
