Pattern Reviews — Champagne Field Dress

Amy and Teresa of Matchy Matchy Sewing Club recently released their Champagne Fields Dress, a prairie-style dress pattern with ruffles galore and lots of options for customising. Hooray! An array of Japanese cotton lawn prints arrived in stores and online recently too, including three colours of Segment Spot Cotton Shirting! We're loving the True Blue colour-way here; it lends the vintage-esqe dress style a modern playful vibe. Read on for our review, kindly modelled by Steph from our HQ team.

Steph wears a crew neck white cotton Make by TFS Fog Tee under her dress!

Pattern Review

The Champagne Field Dress will tick lots of boxes for fans of ruffles and gathers! The front and back bodice include soft gathers that sit above the bust. The pattern provides a View A - mini dress, which sits above the knee and includes a flutter sleeve with a lower armscye. View B is a midi-length dress, with a high-low hem and gathered, elasticated puff sleeves. Both views include a large bottom ruffle, which you could easily omit if you wish! Amy and Teresa describe the style as a having 'smock-like comfortable fit', which Steph would agree with.

We made a size C for Steph according to the measurements provided, and this used 2.7m of our Segment Spot Cotton Shirting - True Blue, which is 108cm wide. Because our fabric was a little narrower than the recommended width, we had to split the frill pattern piece into a few segments, which was easy-peasy and took very little time! No other modifications were made to the pattern and this was a very simple sew. The instruction manual was clear and easy to follow.

Steph loves layering her dresses, and mentioned if she was going to make another Champagne Field Dress she would likely size up one size! In the photos here she has a Make by TFS Fog Tee on underneath, made up in a deadstock white cotton jersey.

The Champagne Fields Dress is a PDF downloadable pattern only, and is currently available in sizes A-H. This sizing ranges from 79cm (31") - 132cm (52") in the bust and 86cm (34") - 140cm (55") in the hip.

Fabric Recommendations

Segment Spot Cotton Shirting - True Blue

So many incredible deadstock cotton shirtings are available in stores and online at the moment, including recent new prints from Japan! Matchy Matchy recommend light - medium weight fabrics for this pattern, and we think it would sew up beautifully in so many fabrics. Think textural breezy linens, crisp cottons, soft silks, classic Liberty prints and more! Below are a few of our most recent arrivals, check them out in store and online today.

The Champagne Field Dress pattern is a fun take on a super trendy dress style and a great pattern for a cotton print. Amy and Teresa have loads of pattern hack ideas over on their blog too! Share your makes with us on Instagram and TikTok using #TheFabricStore
